IAPP chapter chair roles and expectations
Help lead the IAPP by serving as a KnowledgeNet chapter chair or a young privacy professional. Share your expertise and shape the future of privacy, AI governance and cyber security law with fellow thought leaders from around the world. The application period for these positions opens every September through our annual Call for Volunteers.
Roles and expectations
Chapter chairs work with their local KnowledgeNet chapter co-chairs to plan quarterly educational and networking activities for members. Chapter chairs serve a two-year term.
KnowledgeNet Chapter chairs are required to:
- Maintain an active IAPP membership.
- Actively contribute to planning and attending chapter meetings.
- Communicate regularly with co-chairs, young privacy professionals and their assigned IAPP staff partner about chapter planning.
- Organize quarterly educational meetings for local members featuring a relevant topic and engaging presentation or discussion.
- Organize at least one educational meeting annually that aligns with an IAPP section.
- Hold at least one virtual meeting annually.
- Organize at least two casual networking activities for local members and guests.
- Coordinate with a young privacy professional, if there is one in your area.
- Secure a knowledgeable speaker or diverse panel.
- Work with local organizations to donate meeting space or find an approved virtual platform.
- Guide new co-chairs and engage with other chapter volunteers and members.
- Be advocates for the IAPP in their local chapter.
- Promote their local chapter activities through social media and personal networks.
- Promote the privacy, AI governance and digital responsibility professions by ensuring their chapter’s meetings and activities meet member needs.
Selection criteria
Chapter chairs are selected with the goal of creating a balanced working group based on experience level, industry sector, and area of expertise. Considerations for selection include:
- Professional experience and knowledge of privacy, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity laws, regulations, policies, procedures, best practices and theory.
- Length of membership plus commitment to and involvement with the IAPP.
- Must have attended at least one KnowledgeNet meeting.
